NEET UG 2027 Moves to Computer Based Testing: What Changes and How to Prepare
Quick answer
NEET UG is set to move from pen and paper (OMR) to a computer based test (CBT) from the 2027 session, following the NTA's submission to the Supreme Court. Reports say the syllabus, subjects and 720 total marks stay the same. Shift timings, centres and any score normalisation will be confirmed only in the official information bulletin.
What has been announced#
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has told the Supreme Court that NEET UG can be conducted as a computer based test (CBT) from the 2027 session. Several outlets report that the Union Education Minister announced the shift on 15 May 2026, after the controversy around the NEET UG 2026 paper.
What reports consistently say will not change:
- Syllabus. The NEET UG syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) stays as it is.
- Subjects and total marks. The paper is still expected to carry 720 marks.
- Marking scheme. Reports describe no change to the marking pattern, which is currently +4 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong one.
What does change is the mode: you will read questions on a screen and mark answers with a mouse instead of shading an OMR sheet.
Still pending: the official NEET UG 2027 information bulletin. Until it is released, details like the number of shifts, exam dates, centre list and whether scores are normalised are reports, not rules. Check neet.nta.nic.in before acting on any of them.
Why a single day exam may become multiple shifts#
A pen and paper NEET can run for over 20 lakh candidates on one afternoon because every centre only needs desks and invigilators. A CBT needs a computer for every candidate. Reports suggest the exam may be spread across several days and shifts, which is how JEE Main already works.
That raises the question every aspirant is asking: what if my shift is harder than someone else's?
How normalisation could work#
When an exam runs in multiple shifts with different papers, raw marks are not directly comparable. The NTA already solves this for JEE Main by converting raw marks into percentile scores within each shift. Your percentile says what share of candidates in your own shift scored at or below you.
If NEET follows the same approach, a harder shift does not automatically hurt you, because you are compared first with the people who sat the same paper. This is an assumption based on the JEE Main method. The NTA has not published a NEET normalisation formula, and this guide will be updated when it does.
What to change in your preparation#
The content you study does not change. The skill you practise does.
- Take mocks on a screen. Reading long Biology statements and Physics diagrams on a monitor is slower for most students at first. Shift at least half of your full length mocks to a computer based format from now.
- Practise rough work on paper beside a screen. In a CBT you solve on a rough sheet and enter the answer on the screen. Train the habit of copying the final option correctly, because transfer errors cost marks.
- Use mark for review deliberately. CBT interfaces let you flag questions. Decide a rule, for example one pass for confident answers and a second pass for flagged ones, and use it in every mock.
- Track time per section. On paper you can see the whole booklet at once. On screen you see one question at a time, so it is easier to lose track of time. Note your time at fixed checkpoints in mocks.
- Do not rewrite your plan around rumours. Until the bulletin is out, keep your syllabus coverage and revision schedule as they are.
What this means for your college choices#
The mode change does not change how counselling works. MCC conducts All India Quota counselling, and state authorities run state quota counselling, using your NEET rank. You can use the NEET college predictor and NEET cutoffs to see which colleges fit a rank range, and talk to verified seniors in MBBS programmes about what they would do differently.
Frequently asked questions#
Is NEET 2027 going to be online?#
Reports say NEET UG will be held as a computer based test at designated centres from 2027. It is not a test you take from home. The official information bulletin will confirm the format.
Will the NEET 2027 syllabus change because of CBT?#
No change to the syllabus has been reported. The shift is in the mode of the exam, not the content.
Will NEET 2027 have multiple shifts?#
Reports suggest it may be held over several days in multiple shifts. The NTA has not yet published the schedule.
How will marks be compared across shifts?#
If there are multiple shifts, some form of normalisation is likely. JEE Main uses percentile scores within each shift. The NTA has not announced the method for NEET.
