JoSAA Freeze, Float and Slide Explained: Which Option to Choose in Each Round
Quick answer
In JoSAA, freeze means you accept your allotted seat and stop taking part in later rounds. Float means you accept it but want an upgrade to any higher choice, in any institute. Slide means you accept it but only want an upgrade to a higher branch in the same institute. If no upgrade comes through, you keep the seat you accepted.
The three options in one table#
After each JoSAA round, a candidate who is allotted a seat must accept it and choose a willingness option. The option decides what happens to you in the next round.
| Option | You keep your current seat? | Considered for upgrades? | Upgrade can come from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Yes | No | Nowhere. You exit later rounds. |
| Float | Yes, unless upgraded | Yes | Any higher choice in your list, any institute |
| Slide | Yes, unless upgraded | Yes | Only higher choices in the same institute |
In every case the seat you accepted is protected. An upgrade replaces it only if a higher choice opens up. If you are upgraded, the earlier seat is released.
Freeze: when you are done#
Choose freeze when the seat you got is the one you want, or when nothing above it on your list matters enough to wait for.
Example. Your first choice was Computer Science at a particular NIT and you got it in round 1. There is nothing higher on your list, so freezing is the natural choice.
Freeze also makes sense if you have ranked choices above your seat that you would not actually prefer any more. Remember that an upgrade is automatic: if you float and a seat you listed higher opens up, you will be moved to it.
Float: when you want the best possible upgrade#
Choose float when you would prefer any of your higher choices, even if it means changing institute.
Example. You got Electrical Engineering at NIT A, but your list had Computer Science at NIT B and Electrical at NIT C above it. Floating keeps you in the running for both. If either opens up in a later round, you move automatically.
The risk with float is not losing your seat. It is being moved to a choice you placed higher in a rush and no longer want. Before you float, reread every choice above your current seat.
Slide: when you love the institute but not the branch#
Choose slide when the institute matters most and you only want a better branch inside it.
Example. You got Civil Engineering at an older IIT and you want to stay at that IIT for its campus, alumni network or location. Your list has Mechanical and Chemical at the same IIT above Civil. Sliding keeps you in the running for those, and you will not be moved to another institute.
How to decide in four questions#
- Is there any choice above my current seat that I would genuinely prefer? If not, freeze.
- Would I move institutes for a better branch? If yes, float.
- Do I want to stay at this institute no matter what? If yes, slide.
- Have I reread my full list this round? Your preferences can change between rounds. Your list cannot be edited after choice locking, so the willingness option is your main control.
Common mistakes#
- Not accepting the seat. If you are allotted a seat and do not complete the acceptance steps by the deadline, you can lose the seat and your place in later rounds. Check the JoSAA schedule after every round.
- Floating with a padded list. Students sometimes add choices they would not take just to fill the list. With float, those choices can be allotted to you.
- Assuming an upgrade is likely. Use past round wise closing ranks to judge how much a branch usually moves between rounds. The JoSAA cutoff explorer shows round by round history, and the trends view shows movement across years.
Plan your list before counselling opens#
Build and order your choices with the choice filling planner, test them against the college predictor, and ask a verified senior from the institutes on your shortlist what the branch is really like before you decide between float and slide.
Frequently asked questions#
Can I lose my seat if I choose float?#
No. With float you keep the seat you accepted unless you are upgraded to a higher choice. You only lose it if you do not complete the acceptance steps in time.
What is the difference between float and slide in JoSAA?#
Float considers you for upgrades to any higher choice in any institute. Slide considers you only for higher branches in the institute where you currently hold a seat.
Can I change from float to freeze in a later round?#
Yes. You can choose a willingness option after each round you are allotted a seat in, so you can float in one round and freeze in the next.
Does freezing a seat stop me from CSAB counselling?#
CSAB has its own rules and eligibility conditions for each year. Read the CSAB business rules for the current year before you decide.
