The paper format#

GATE is a three hour computer based test carrying 100 marks. General Aptitude is common to all papers and carries 15 marks. The remaining 85 marks come from your subject.

There are three question types:

  • MCQ: one correct option. Wrong answers carry negative marks.
  • MSQ: one or more correct options. No negative marking, but no partial marks either.
  • NAT: you type a numerical answer. No negative marking.

Confirm the details for your paper in the official information brochure.

The 100 day plan#

Days 1 to 50: finish and revise the core#

  • List every subject in your paper's syllabus and mark each as done, weak, or not started.
  • Finish the not started subjects first, but cap the time. A subject with a low weightage in past papers is not worth two weeks now.
  • Revise each finished subject with short notes you can reread in under an hour.
  • Practise General Aptitude for 20 minutes a day. These 15 marks are among the easiest to secure.

Days 51 to 85: topic tests and previous papers#

  • Solve GATE previous year papers for your subject, topic by topic. They show what IITs actually ask.
  • Take one topic test a day and log every mistake in one line.
  • Use the on screen virtual calculator in practice. You will not have a physical calculator in the exam.

Days 86 to 100: full mocks#

  • Take a full three hour mock every other day, in the same session timing as your paper.
  • On the days between, analyse the mock and revise only from your mistake log and short notes.
  • Stop heavy study the day before. Check your admit card, centre and route.

What your score opens#

A GATE score is used for M.Tech and M.E. admissions at IITs through COAP and at NITs and other institutes through CCMT, for direct PhD admissions, and for recruitment by several public sector undertakings. Explore past cutoffs with the GATE cutoff explorer, check PSU score requirements, and test your options with the M.Tech predictor. Verified seniors who cleared GATE can tell you whether an M.Tech or a PSU job suits your goals.
